Notes for George Alfred Mills
James Mills, in his email dated 25 January 2011, states:
George Alfred Mills, (born 10.3.1848 Parramatta, my great-great grandfather) married Maria Kendall (born 23.11.1850 Penrith, daughter of Ann Kendall and William Kendall deceased) at the residence of George's eldest brother, John Yelverton Mills at Parramatta on the 29.6.1869. George was a Wesleyan Methodist and Maria was a Scots Presbyterian so I am assuming that both being protestant families the wedding venue was a compromise. George was a public school teacher at South Creek and the son of a school teacher, teaching primary school age children. The wedding certificate I have that has been passed down states that Archibald Gilchrist was the attending minister and permission had to be obtained from Maria's mother, Ann, since Maria was under 21 years of age. The document also states that the two witnesses were George's brother, Alexander Henry Mills, and Maria's sister, Matilda Kendall.
George and Maria had seven children-
John Brier Mills b. 23.5.1870 South Creek
Florence Beatrice Mills b. 8.12.1872 South Creek
Annie Clarissa Mills b. 5.1.1874 South Creek
Lillian Maud Mills b. 5.6.1876 Hornsby
William Checkley Mills b. 22.11.1878 Hornsby (my descendant)
Harold Norman Kendall Mills b. 12.7.1884 Parramatta
Grace Avonmore Mills b. 29.5.1891 Broken Hill, d. 5.6.1891 also at Broken Hill.
George retired from teaching in 1883 and worked for his brother John's real estate firm for six years in Parramatta before moving the family to Broken Hill to go into business in silver mining and as part proprietor of the local newspaper, the 'Barrier Miner'. George was an active member of the Broken Hill community involved in many associations and was a J.P for New South Wales,Vic and Queensland,. Maria, from what I can tell, was a devoted wife and that George and Maria loved each other very much. They were also very much the middle class colonial Victoria, torian family. After several of the children moved to Perth between 1894 and 1902, George and Maria moved to Perth in 1906 and resided at daughter Lillian's (also a primary school teacher, and a Presbyterian like her mother) residence at no. 2 Rose Street, North Perth. Maria died on the 14.7.1914, at North Perth, and George three years later on the 28.4.1917, also at North Perth.
