He applied for enlistment on 10 March, 1916 and stated he had been in the Cadets for 4 years. He was 5’ 10” and weighed 10stone 4lbs. He had fair complexion, gray eyes and medium brown hair. He had a chest measurement of 36 inches.
With the 17th Battn he embarked Sydney on the Euripides on 9 September 1916 and disembarked Plymouth 26 Oct. 1916. He travelled on the SS Golden Eagle from Folkestone England on 13 Dec. 1916 for France. He left France on the HT Ville de Leige with acute bronchitis. He returned to Australia on the Miltiades on 12 June, 1919 arriving 8 August, 1919.
He was discharged Totally and Permanently Incapacitated on 22 September, 1919.
