Enlisted in the AIF on 31 January, 1916 at age 21, single. He gave his Grandfather as his next-of-kin (name not given) with address 51 Spit Rd, Mosman, New South Wales, Australia. He swore allegiance at Casuala, New South Wales, Australia on 31 Jan, 1916. He was 5’ 5.5” tall, weighed 145 lbs, had blue eyes, fair hair and fair complextion. His chest measurement was 35 “. He joined the 2/59 Battalion on 16 April, 1916 and embarked on 1 May, 1916. He arrived in France in October 1916 but was admitted to hospital in England with “trench feet” on 4 December, 1916. He sailed back to Australia aboard the H T Thermistocles on 15 July, 1917 and was discharged medically unfit on 17 August, 1917. He was awarded a medical pension of three pounds per fortnight.
