Notes for William Rutter
This family is mentioned in "Milton Pioneers" pages 187-189
William Rutter (1770-1812) b. Lymington England arrived in Australia in 1807 as Superintendent of Salt works for the John Blaxland family, who had come out on 'The Brothers'. He married the Blaxland children's governess, Mrs Charlotte Flower in 1807, much to the annoyance of the Blaxlands, who did their best to make things difficult for the couple.
Also "Kissin Cousins" by Marjorie Kendall, page 82
He was a widower who had been recruited by the Blaxland Brothers in Lymington, Hampshire, as a salt boiler because noone in the colony had the expertise to extract salt from sea water to preserve meat and fish.
